The Union Hockey League is officially launched! On Saturday, the first three games of the regular season were played. The Mallards see their two bye weeks to start off as an opportunity to scope out the competition.
North Shore Nighthawks vs. Hudson Valley Vipers
The Nighthawks hosted an absolute barn burner for their home opener winning against the Vipers 15-4. The star of the game, by far, was Cam Cordio. The Leominster, MA native tucked 7 goals to help his team make a statement to the rest of the Eastern Division.
Boston Gold Kings vs. Holyoke Papermen
The John A Ryan Arena in Watertown, MA was packed last night to see the Gold Kings defeat the Papermen 6-3. Jarrod Fitzpatrick was crowned the star of the game after scoring the first goal in Gold Kings history.
Niagara Falls Buffalos vs. Soo Nordiques
This was by far the game of the night. The Buffalos, down 3-0 going into the third, got back all three of those goals within 4 minutes. Spencer Hrynczak of Niagara Falls quickly settled things only 15 seconds into overtime giving him not only the honor of the game winning goal, but a hat-trick as well. The Buffalos will be riding the high of their 4-3 comeback overtime victory into their first road trip of the season against Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh River Monsters vs. West Michigan Sentinels
The Pittsburgh River Monsters broke the trend of the home team winning their home opener by taking down the Sentinels 8-5. The star of the game was easily captain Kurt Schmidt with 2 goals and an assist.
